Going green isn’t being marketed very well.

Opinion

You know it doesn’t matter what side you’re on or what news department you listen to anymore.  The economy is going down the drain period.  There is no ifs ands or buts about it anymore.  So, then why isn’t something that doesn’t appeal to the masses in America being marketed more towards this economy?  As I see it many commercials, marketing plans and websites are out there trying to convince people in America to go green because we have to because its good for the earth.  I absolutely 100% believe that is the truth.  The earth needs fixing the environment has been trashed and its past time to clean it up.

So, why not go after Americans where it counts?  Go after the wallets and the end of the month bills that hurt them so badly to open that they sit for a week on the coffee table or kitchen counter.  It needs to be explained to those people who don’t care about the environment that going green can and usually does save money in the long run.  That the investment in their home and lifestyle not only is good for the earth, but has an ROI.

Would that be so bad for the green movement? No, absolutely not it would be great.  Our end goal after all is to get more people thinking responsibly so that the earth benefits and has a chance to do some recovering.  Now if that means showing others that going green means they can cut down their monthly bills and save some money in the long run then by all means that is what needs to get done.

Trying to convince the people who care about the planet that going green is the thing to do is a no brainer that’s easy.  Advertising firms are milking it and taking the easy money convincing those that need no convincing.  Enough of that go after the people that don’t care and make them care if not about the green earth then the green in there pocket.  It’ll be good for all of us in the end.

A good point. Heard of Natural Capitalism? There’s been a lot of argument from the eco-economists over the past 20 years that being environmentally friendly is ultimately good for business and good for the citizen’s pocketbook. Now, if only groups would make that more central in the public advocacy efforts. More on Natural Capitalism: Lessons From Nature About Managing Resources.

Of course…. people are selfish animals and you need to appeal to that side to get a movement like this really going!!!

Jason, you’re right. The green movement isn’t being marketed very well at all. Even when the economy is bad, no matter how bad it gets, alternative ways of living seems to be viewed as something of a burden than a worthwhile endeavor for many people. It’s strange calling green living alternative when it feels much more appropriate. I’ve pretty much been going the “saves money” route with my marketing in hopes that once they do try it that they’ll realize the benefits of going green.

Good points Jason – but I also see the other side of things that there is also a lot of greenwashing going on. I am just starting to get fed up with companies promoting their products as “green” when they really aren’t, just to look good I guess and fit in.

I applaud the companies and corporations who are really making a difference and agree they should be marketed better, but at the same time we need lots of education for the average consumer about what it truly means to be “green”.

Tim: Thanks for stopping by Tim I’m glad you brought up Natural Capitalism as I’ve not yet gotten to look much into that. I sure will after this comment though.

Richard @ Composters.com: You’re a smart man Richard I’m glad you’re using this technique the best you can to promote your green business. I still enjoy your websites quite a bit while I’m dream shopping. :)

Evita: I think you’re right and too many people have the different definitions when it comes to words like green or environmentally friendly. Education is key and something you know I’ve been pushing since the beginning. I’m glad you stopped by thank you for your comments it was great as usual to hear your opinion! :)

Learn how to write. You should have used “you’re” instead of “your” in the first sentence, idiot. People won’t listen to what you have to say when the subtext of what you’re writing is “I’m dumb.”

Thanks for catching that Andy. Sometimes a few grammatical errors slip by me.

Jason – ignore the rude remarks. One thing that contributes to the success of blogs is their personal nature. Spelling and grammar mistakes contribute to the personal side.
